چکیده

The genus Streptococcus includes a heterogeneous group of different Gram positive species (>30) that are identified on Gram stain by their spherical or ovoid shape and their tendency to grow in pairs and chains. They are nonmotile, non-spore forming, and mostly facultatively anaerobic. Streptococci are a heterogeneous group that includes a variety of species capable of causing a diverse array of different diseases ranging from minor soft tissue infections to life-threatening sepsis. The most important pathogens in this group are Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus), Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus). DNA homology studies have established Enterococcus (formerly streptococci) as a separate genus, distinct from Streptococcus. This lecture will cover only two of these pathogens, S. pyogenes and S. pneumoniae. Although not covered in the lecture you are also responsible for S. agalactiae, enterococci and viridans streptococci. The different streptococcal species have different sites of colonization and cause different types of infections. These are described in the table below.

بررسی اثر هم افزایی سیپروفلوکساسین بر پیپراسیلین، سفتازیدیم و ایمی پنم بر آنتروکوک‌ها

Background and Objective: Attention has largely been focused on appearance of multiple drug resistance enterococci in the last 20 years. One of the methods to overcome this problem is to combine different antibiotics in order to increase antimicrobial activity and reduce toxicity. The combination of fluor quinolones with other antibiotics has been widely investigated. The aim of this study was ...

In vitro activity of LY146032 against staphylococci, streptococci, and enterococci.

The in vitro activities of LY146032 and seven comparative antimicrobial agents against 14 species of staphylococci, streptococci, and enterococci were studied. MICs of LY146032 were less than or equal to 0.5 microgram/ml for all staphylococci, including oxacillin-resistant strains; less than or equal to 0.25 microgram/ml for all streptococci (except viridans group streptococci); and less than o...

Rapid, cost-effective identification of group A streptococci and enterococci by pyrrolidonyl-beta-naphthylamide hydrolysis.

Group A streptococci and enterococci were identified by two L-pyrrolidonyl-beta-naphthylamide (PYR) hydrolysis tests. One uses Minitek PYR disks (BBL Microbiology Systems, Cockeysville, Md.); the other uses a swab impregnated with PYR reagent. Both tests and Strep-A-Chek (EY Laboratories, San Mateo, Calif.), a commercially available PYR test, were compared with conventional methods. The PYR met...

Sodium chloride-esculin hydrolysis test for rapid identification of enterococci.

The ability of enterococci to cause severe disease in humans and their relative resistance to chemotherapeutic agents make it desirable to rapidly differentiate these organisms from other streptococci. We developed and evaluated a test that within 2 h distinguishes enterococci from other alpha-, beta-, or nonhemolytic streptococci in a buffered solution containing 0.2% esculin and 5% sodium chl...

In Vitro Ability of the Group B Streptococci to Inhibit Gram-Positive and Gram-Variable Constituents of the Bacterial Flora of the Female Genital Tract

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to analyze the ability of septicemic and nonsepticemic isolates of group B streptococci (GBS) to inhibit in vitro the principal bacterial groups found in the normal bacterial flora of the female genital tract. METHODS The target groups were composed of 1) 10 strains each of the following: viridans streptococci, nonhemolytic streptococci (not group B or ...
